I did a little research. Seems that The Thong was first designed by an unknown Brazilian designer for swimsuits sometime in the late sixties or seventies. But it wasn't until the early eighties that Victoria Secret and Frederick's of Hollywood started creating them as panties for sale in the US.

And I guess it's not really until the mid nineties that they took off as mainstream.

There are also many different types. I thought they were all pretty much thongs but seemingly this is a T-Bar. As opposed to a pure thong, or tanga, or string.

Shame that on person can't get credited with the design. If there were a panties hall of fame (and there should be), the designer of the thong should reside there.
